NEWMARKET LIONS EFFECTIVE SPEAKING CONTEST
Lions International invites all 47000 clubs in 217 countries to hold local effective speaking contests and where possible take local winners on to district and multiple district events recognizing the achievements of local winners.
The goals of Effective Speaking are to promote competitive speaking in both official languages and to stimulate independent thinking among students.
Each fall, the Newmarket Lions Club sends out rules and invitations through school principals to all student in grades 4 to 12 inviting them to participate in our local contest held at Trinity United Church the first Saturday in March. Individual participants can apply directly to ksbrock@rogers.com.
Participants at Junior level (grade 4,5,6) deliver a prepared speech of 3 to 5 minutes.
Participants at Intermediate (grade 7,8,9) and Senior (grade 10,11,12) levels deliver a speech of 5 to 7 minutes prepared in advance. They also must prepare and deliver a 3 minute impromptu speech. The participants select a topic from a list and, are then given 15 minutes to prepare.
Regularly, we host up to 35 participants for our local contest. At the end of the competition, a light luncheon is served and a celebration of the contest takes place with all contestants receiving certificates and cash prizes.
