READING ACTION PROGRAM
Lions International has over 1.7 million members, in 47000 clubs, in 214 countries. We promote literacy worldwide.
The Newmarket Lions Club has been running a Reading Action Program in local schools since 2015.

HOW IT WORKS
Lions International sought out and received agreements with several multinational book corporations to get discounts on books at grade appropriate levels for distribution. The Newmarket Lions club procures books through this agreement from Scholastic.
The Newmarket Lions Club provides a FREE book to every kindergarten student (1200 students) to 12 Newmarket Schools.
Each year, primary teachers identify 12 to 14 titles listed on the Scholastic book list. The students are given the list and asked to make a selection.
Once received, a distribution event is organized. A group of Lions visit each school to read to small groups of children while other groups are getting their book from the choices available. The books are personalized with a stamp that reads “This book belongs to” and the Lions Club logo.

In 2020, 11 schools were visited and 1,100 books were distributed.
